purifying house plants

Last week I mentioned that plants were one way to purify the air in your house. I've never been too crazy about the look of plants in the house. Not to mention that I do not have a green thumb (or maybe I forget to water them), so most of my plants die. However, I wanted to purify the air without having to purchase an air purifier and figure out a good place for it. Plants can be placed throughout the house, where as an air purifier, I would have to purchase more than one. There are around 15 house plants that are said to keep the air in our homes clean and help regulate indoor humidity. These plants absorb pollutants, remove harmful gases and help fight pollution. I decided to just focus on 5 well-known plants. I recently found two air purifying plants at Aldi's for $1.99. Who can beat that? They can also be found all year around at places like Lowe's or Home Depot. Paint some cute pots or hunt some down at a yard sale or Goodwill and get to purifying that house!

Aloe - filters various gas emissions from dangerously toxic materials (great for burns too!)

Spider plant - removes poisonous gases, formaldehyde and xylene. It works best kept in the kitchen or near the fireplace where carbon monoxide accumulates a lot.

Snake plant - absorb formaldehyde, nitrogen oxides and other chemicals. This one also is okay with irregular watering (YES!) and little light.

Areca palm - removes deadly toxins like formaldehyde and xylene and acts as a great humidifier.

Peace lily - great pollution fighter, air-purifier and removes benzene and formaldehyde.
