Home Updates Using Post Consumer Goods

Before we know it, it will be spring. Time for spring cleaning, sprucing up the yard and updating around the house. We can't afford expensive updates, so we are frequent visitors of the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in St. Charles off of I-70 (there is also one in St. Louis off of Forest Park Ave.). The Restore is a big open store full of doors, toilets, windows, sinks, cabinets and anything you can imagine used in your house. All of these items have been donated, so you pay a fraction of the cost and the money goes to building homes for families in need in St. Charles County. This store facilitates reuse and waste reduction by diverting construction and household materials from landfills. We have been able to do two huge curb appeal updates for a cheap price.
Pictured above is our new front door which was purchased for $150. This door retails for over $1000. It needs a new paint job on the outside (the inside looks great), but for $150 I will paint that door all day long! The other door is our back door. We have a walk out basement and our driveway is behind our house, so this is the door everyone comes in. The one that is there now is so hard to open and not very appealing to my eyes. We found this BRAND NEW door (that's the interior of the door you are seeing) at the ReStore for $250. This door retails for over $2000. That's right, I said it. Where else can you purchase post consumer items to update your house while supporting an organization that builds homes for those in need? I'm reusing, donating, updating...I love the Habitat ReStore! My handy husband and father-in-law are installing the new door as we speak, so naturally I have to go supervise. Have a great Friday, friends!
